Braces Price in Malaysia: Cheapest to Most Expensive Options

Support a content creator, share this article :)

So you have decided to fix your teeth and looking up braces prices in Malaysia. It’s OK – I’ve been there, and yes for me it was SUPER WORTH IT.

Being cost-conscious and all, I did research on the braces price in Malaysia, but specifically in Greater Klang Valley area. In this post I will share what I found out, plus the additional costs that I personally incur while getting braces (2017-2019)

Braces options in Malaysia

In this article, I’ll be covering braces cost for conventional braces, Damon braces, clear aligners, and the cheapest braces option of all: through government hospitals.

Very quickly, here are the price range for braces in Malaysia:

  • Conventional braces: GP – RM5,000++ | Specialist – RM8,000-10,000++
  • Conventional braces: Government dental clinic – RM500-2500
  • Damon braces: GP – RM7,000-9,000++ | Specialist – RM12,000++
  • Clear aligners: Invisalign – RM15,000-20,000++
  • Clear aligners: Zenyum Invisible Braces – as low as RM7,499

See each section below for more info on each braces option. Prices differ based on many factors, including govt vs private, location and other factors (but don’t select your dentist based on price alone – see the last section).

The reference to these braces prices in this article is from price list I took from a dentist and from asking people, both online and offline. Learn more about each type of braces and which one you should opt for in their respective section below.

Note: This pricing scale still applies in 2023

#1 – Conventional braces / Metal braces price in Malaysia

braces price

What it is: Braces in which the wire is secured with elastic bands. Most people have this option; conventional braces is the most cost-effective option

Total cost:

  • GP – RM5,000++
  • Specialist – RM8,000-10,000++
  • Government dental clinic – ~RM500-2500 (varies; see below)

Cheap braces in Malaysia: Government Dental Clinic

You can get extremely cheap braces in Malaysia by going through government hospitals, and based on feedback, they only offer conventional braces option. The savings are HUGE, but the downside is:

  • (1) eligibility – You might not be eligible for it
  • (2) waiting time – If you are eligible, you might have to wait a long time for it
  • (3) appointment schedule – people report that clinic visits can be a hassle, especially for those in school/ follow office hours

How to apply government braces – step-by-step

Here are the steps to apply for braces from the Government:

  • Go to any government-run dental clinic and do a dental checkup
  • Request for a referral letter – you need this to set an appointment with Klinik Pakar Orthodontik
  • Wait for appointment date
  • After the check, if you are eligible then they will advice the next steps to install your braces 🙂

You can also refer from this lady, who got her braces from government dental clinic

For more info, please check the comments section for first-person accounts from people who got their conventional braces from government hospital options. Some paid RM500, some paid RM2500, some waited months, some waited YEARS.

Important: As far as I know, government dental clinic DOES NOT offer Damon braces or clear aligners, only the conventional metal braces

#2 – Damon Braces price in Malaysia (Metal braces and Ceramic braces)

What it is: Metal or Ceramic braces which the wire is secured by something they call ‘slide mechanism’. Damon braces are also referred to as self-ligating braces, or self-lig for short.

These self-ligating braces come in two types: Damon metal braces (silver) and Damon ceramic braces (white).

Cost (Damon metal braces):

  • GP – RM7,000-9,000++
  • Specialist – RM12,000++
  • Damon ceramic braces: the above, plus a few more thousand

My experience with Damon braces

My dentist recommended Damon braces option to me. She said:

  • I’ll get faster results with Damon braces than conventional braces (mine was done in ~1.5 year – considered super fast!)
  • Less pain than conventional braces (still pain though)
  • Usually don’t have to do teeth extraction (this one doesn’t apply to me, I still had to take out 4 teeth)

(Side note: I wanted the ceramic braces because it’s white and I thought it won’t be too obvious, but my dentist advised against it – she said they stain easily. So if you drink coffee or eat curry/gulai – both of which I do regularly – then don’t do ceramic braces)

My dentist charged RM8,500 for metal Damon braces. How it worked was:

  • I paid RM3,000 in deposit, and
  • paid RM300 monthly for 18 months

I think the dentist purposely structured the payments this way so it will end more or less the same time your braces journey ends. By my last visit, I didn’t have to pay anything else.

By the way, what is included in the braces packages depends on the dentist. For me, the cost of installing braces, adjusting every 4-5 weeks, retainers, the elastic band and dental wax were included. However, teeth extraction and x-ray was not, it was charged separately.

#3 – Clear Aligners price in Malaysia (Clear braces or Invisible braces)

braces price

What it is: These clear braces or invisible braces is a set of 10 or so retainers that you have to wear consistently; each set adjusts the teeth a little bit straighter than the last one. They come in ‘brand names’ – ie Clearpath, Invisalign, Zenyum etc

Cost: RM15,000-20,000 (!!!)

Originally, I wanted to take clear braces because – no shame – vanity reasons. But at that price? No way.

UPDATE: There’s a company called Zenyum which provides a cheaper option for these invisible braces – according to the website, Zenyum Invisible Braces cost from RM7,499, and more for complex cases. Visit the website and claim a free assessment to learn more.

My braces journey: The braces price I paid

So I mentioned that I got Damon metal braces, which cost RM8,500. That’s not the only thing I have to pay – there were add-on costs. In total, I paid over RM10,000 for this braces journey. The cost includes:

Bottom line: Pick reputation & convenience over price

My top tip to save money on braces in Malaysia is, honestly, beyond price, pick a reputable dentist that is convenient for you to go, because you will be visiting them often (once a month or so) for tightening/monitoring/checkup.

I got lucky – I found a dentist within walking distance, so my work (or in your case, study) life wasn’t that disrupted, and I saved money on transportation too.

All in all, I am extremely happy that I got braces. The price was expensive, but it (along with professional teeth whitening session) improved my self-confidence tremendously.

Lastly, I wish everyone planning to do braces all the best. Please leave a comment on the prices your dentist (and what area) is charging you, and what their braces package include, so the rest of us can refer to the info 🙂

  1. Hi Suraya,

My friend got her (conventional) braces done at USM for RM500. I was still on the waiting list and few months ago, USM decided to increase the cost like the private service (BOO). So, I will be paying RM 5K + if I decided to go with it. I checked several private dentists nearby and the cost will be around 7K +. Still unsure, but decided to see the USM dentist next week because finally I managed to secure the apt. after almost 7 months. I waited because I wasn’t in a hurry and was quite busy. But your experience getting the teeth out was quite scary 🙁

    1. RM500 is (was) a great price, but gosh 7 months for an appointment!

Don’t be influenced by me. I’m a crybaby. Most of the time it was more like extreme discomfort rather than actual pain. Painkiller is just basic paracetamol, not some other fancy stuff. You’ll be fine lah

    2. Hi,

Yes, I heard that government’s dentist are quite slow in that department. I was about to sign up for it when I was in form 5, but the attendant advises me to not do so.

The reason was, that the waiting list is like super long. That I might be called in within 2-3 years. She says that assuming, I will be in college soon, there’s also a probability that the appointment date might clash with other stuff like final exams, and etc. So I didn’t continue with it.

Although, I had a friend who was on the waiting list since he was in form 3, then only manage to get to the appointment in form 5, and finally was able to wear braces about 2 years after. The waiting line is crazy af. Hahahha.

However, I was thinking of getting them too. Maybe sometime next year. But I’m super duper scared of it. Hahaha.

      1. Oh my goodness that’s much longer than I thought! 2-3 years??

On getting braces, just do it. I postponed since high school, konon I didn’t care how my teeth look like. Braces don’t only fix cosmetic issue, but also your bite (ie how you chew). My bite now is really bad and by back teeth is ‘haus’ because of it. Only due time that I’d grind it more until it hit nerves, and we all know teeth nerve pain is like hell on earth. I’m glad I’m doing it now before that happens!

    3. I am doing mine in University Malaya Dental Specialist and the cost is RM2.5k. But each visit for appointment you will have to pay RM5.

    4. Hi, I done ceramic braces in the Maldives licensed dental clinic, since I working there. and it cost me about $400. and it works well, I mean you can spend MYR7k in the Maldives and do your braces as well. really worth

    5. Got mine done in Uni Sains Malaysia. Only all inclusive RM 1,500 (RM750 bottom and RM750 top)… no other charges for xray, teeth model etc (maybe because I’m a public servant & working at this Uni) Appointment was ok… took only 2-3 months from the very first consultation/xray day to getting my braces on. I’m a touch lucky cos I have a big jaw but small teeth and some gaps.. no teeth extraction needed. Just put them braces on 2 weeks ago… counting days to the 2-years mark!!! Pretty teeth come to me… 😀

      1. Hello. Sorry i’m 2 years late but im usm student and wondering how could i get it done too? Went to the pusat pergigian behind pusat sejahtera but i didnt get a chance to ask them regarding this. Are u doing it at pusat pergigian or the one at kepala batas?

  2. Gosh ! Su you made me laugh in the middle of the night starting with Bapak and ending with the perempuan melayu terakhir part but hell ur article is super timely – not for me but for both my boys who unfortunately got their cute/ narrow jaw/ no place for gigi to grow hence FUGLY gigi like their DAD !! ??
But holy cow – I’m definitely gonna need to put aside heaps of monehhh for their braces in the next couple of years !!!
20k x 2 plus inflation ?? By then it’ll be – guys ?? Car or gigi ?? Mum and dad can only choose one!
Or mebbe I help them choose gigi and if they are super Hansemmm mebbe they can get a rich gal-friend to fetch them around !
    Lol – I’m a crazy mum !

    1. Rofl poor Dad kena blame hahaha

Glad you enjoyed the article, Angie 🙂 Choose the normal braces for them la, RM5k+ x 2 = RM10k plus. The sooner the better. It seems that price of braces rise every year!

      1. They didn’t inherit their small jaw from their dad so much, it is due to modern foods lacking nutrients and from lack of breastfeeding. Read Dr. Weston-Price’s book “Nutrition and Physical Degeneration”. The cause of all crooked teeth.

  3. Hey ,
I’ve been wearing clearpath for almost 2 years and it cost me more than 15k and I felt like i waste a lot of money on this due to less changes ): mine was quite pricy since it was imported from dubai and i had to wait for almost 3 months for the another batches (GILA LAMA WEH) the reason why i chose clearpath is because my dentist said that i had to ‘cabut’ my gigi if i want to wear the ceramic braces LOL . And yeah , still wearing my clearpath 🙂

    1. MEMANG LAMA GILA Dia naik sampan ke apa sampai 3 bulan wei

Can confirm, cabut gigi sucks. But the cost, woah. I hope you get the results you want Anis, you better.

      1. That time my dentist said segala machine technology takde kat malaysia yet so need to sent to UAE and after 2 years pakai still regret . I mean once you break your cleapath (super lembut and elastic clearpath) it will break and you had to wait for another 2 months like hell . Sekali patah you kena bayar 500 man . I already broke it more than 5 (super careless) so people outside there yg careless like me , do not wear clearpath ! ?

  4. Hi, Suraya.

very useful article . thank you.
but what the meaning of “Cost: GP” ? the price cheaper then specialist. it mean Government?

    thanks.
    Zpeilim

    1. Hey Zpeilim,
GP = General Practitioner. In my understanding, GPs offer more rounded services while specialists have a focus on a specific medical line. Some something like doctor vs cardiologist, for example. I’m not sure what are the major differences in the dental world.

  5. Hi all, i am thinking to install braces at my current age 23. Just finished uni and cannot afford the private clinic braces. I stay in Penang. Do u guys have any idea where should i go to? General Hospital or Klinik kesihatan? And wonder do they do Lingual Braces or short term braces. Thank you! 🙂

    1. Hi, sorry to inform you but if my memory serves me right government hospitals don’t accept patients over the age of 18 (I also heard they stopped accepting patients over 15 on their waiting lists). You can call the hospitals or better yet just walk straight in and ask them. Good luck!

    2. What is your budget? I just installed self ligating braces this week and the total cost is rm7k. If you’re looking for normal braces, there’s one near Pcghs that specializes in braces and it’s around rm3-4k. I didn’t go there as I go to my usual dentist.

          1. Not to be a bummer, but yes quite painful. Could only eat porridge and mashed potatoes during that time. It goes away in a few days though.

    3. AIMST does stuff for free. My dad got dentures there FOC. But have to redo many times cos those students are no good. Did implants and paid only for materials. Dunno about braces.

  6. Hi Suraya,

I just had my root canal treatment today and was thinking of getting braces since my teeth now a bit huru-hara. Cry ?

Heard that the cost is kindda of Astaghfirullah. I’m in my mid 30s and I hope to hear any suggestion, should I go for it? ?

  7. how long does it usually takes of the whole installment process in the private clinics? also, i am quite hesitant because i don’t have any other reason to do it except for the aesthetic purpose.(although my teeth are not perfectly aligned, it is fairly comfortable for me). are there any other benefits that we would get from it?

    1. How long to pay off the installment, you mean? Depends on the cost. For example, mine is RM8.5k with RM3k upfront deposit and RM300 monthly deductions. So RM5.5k divided by RM300 is roughly 18 months.

18 months. That’s how long the dentist say my treatment is going to take. This may or may not be a coincidence

As for the other Q about benefits, not qualified to answer that :/

  8. Thank you for the useful information!

Also, which teeth did they extract? Did they choose it or you have to choose it yourself? Have you notice any change on your facial structure? It’s one of the reason I want to install it.

    1. Hey Arina,
      You’re welcome 🙂
They extracted the canine teeth I think? Not sure what they’re called, might be wrong. See my teeth mold in the article – they pulled out the ones with the ‘x’ on them

No I haven’t noticed facial structure lah. But heard braces does that to some people who fix their protruding teeth and stuff

  9. Wow, thanks for the info!

I didn’t know GP could also do dental braces.

In my case, it’s not just cosmetic issue — my teeth are not aligned properly. So I get plaques and cavities more often (even though I floss regularly).

    1. Hi Marilyn,

GP here means regular dentists la. Not doctor at clinics, completely different specialisation.

All the best for your braces journey! Glad the info helped 🙂

      1. LOL! When you said ‘GP’ I thought you were referring to doctors at clinics. Sorry, sorry!

  10. Hi, i’m thinking to install braces at my current age 20. I studying at uni now and cannot afford for private clinic braces. Can i go for government hospital? Thank you!

    1. Yes you can. I am 27 this year and am doing my braces in UM. But you will have to wait. I registered when I was 25 but only after 2 years they gave me a call.

  11. Hi! I was wondering if putting on braces will causing problem on pronunciation? I’m gonna putting on braces next few weeks, and this really bothered me. I’m a college students, and going to have many presentations, weird pronunciation would be embarrassing ??‍♀️

    1. Hi Zi Qing,
Hmm you won’t be happy with my anecdote. A few months in and I still jumble some words. In my case it’s mainly due to the elastics I have to wear. If you don’t it should be okay. Kot.
Don’t let it stop you though. I wish I did my braces earlier!

  12. Hi, if it’s possible, may I know which dentist you went to? I’ve been wanting to get the Damon Braces for a long long long time now but I haven’t found any place that’s below 9k for them. Thank you so much for the help!

  13. Great Post!
I registered for government’s dentist during form 1~2, it’s been too long I cant really remember, and only receive letter to do appointment during Uni…. which is about 5 years later. As I was busy to do assignments and exams, I didn’t really have the time to go to the clinic.. so I just quit it after getting the x-ray scanned and study model done.

Now I want to do it at private dentist. I just visited a dentist this morning and she told me it costs around 6.5k as my teeth are very crooked (T.T). The prices are very similar to your post. Hopefully everything goes well..

    1. Hi JJ,
5 years! OMG so long the wait!
All the best in your journey. It’ll be okay, braces is not uncommon 🙂 I get so many ex-bracefaces wishing me luck!

  14. I’m currently in the waiting list of a government dental clinic in bangsar since 2014. My doctor said that I’ll be doing my braces anytime in 2019 if my final checkup in Dec 2018 goes well.. Yeah for gov you really have to be patient cause the waiting list is srsly long but the price is alot lower than private ones.

  15. Hi Suraya thanks for the insightful article. Is the Damon braces similar to Six Months Smile? I’ve been scouring for more information on typical prices for Six Months Smile in Malaysia but can’t find much. I was quoted RM12k including xrays, consultations, polishing and fillings, and retainers. Any idea of what’s the usual price range?

    1. Hey Anura. I’ve heard about Six Months Smile but I think that’s an American thing, a marketing gimmick. Looking at the price, it might be ceramic damon braces, in which case yeah it costs roughly that.

Be careful though, six months is not enough to fix other than minor cosmetic cases. My teeth was not that bad and still need 1.5 years.

  16. i’ve read in another blog post that you bought the waterpik, do you feel that it makes a difference? how much was it and where did you get it? sorry for all the questions haha

    1. Hey Ari,

Sorry, kinda missed this question. I LOVE THE WATERPIK. I got it from Shopee I think, for around RM300 plus, the cheapest one. In hindsight I should have bought the rechargeable version for ~RM100 more. Spending a lot on AA batteries :/

  17. Hi Suraya,

I had mine done 2 years ago (now braces-free yay!) and it was, in total, RM3500. Yes, it was a legit dentist, but based in Seremban. I was okay with that because my hometown is in Seremban. So, I would just set my appointments every Monday morning after staying with my parents on the weekends and go straight to work in KL after.

The cheap price tag does come with a few setbacks – you can’t really choose what type of braces you want, what colour bands you want, and the doctor didn’t really like to explain much. He was really irked when I asked him how come he didn’t put the braces on all of my teeth, leaving two of my back teeth braces-free (resulting to a weird alignment that is visible when my mouth is wide open). After that, I just decided to shut up and have faith in him, praying that his degree from UKM hung at the lobby is legit. (It is, I checked.)

Nevertheless, I am very satisfied with the result, my teeth is now so straight I feel like never smiling closed mouth again. I guess I get exactly what I paid for.

Just sharing my story. Hope you will feel the same way too when you are braces-free.

    1. Hey Nani,

That was cheap, good for you! Never mind the customer service :p

I can’t wait to get these braces off. Already can see major improvements, so I know it’s working!

      Thanks for your sharing 🙂

  18. Hi Suraya,
I just wanted to share my sadness. I am having a Class 3 teeth, supposedly need to do operation to get rid some of my jaw and only then can wear braces. Or still can wear braces without the operation but the result will not be perfect. I have been delaying this braces thingy since 2015. the last time i went to consult, the braces cost me RM5.5K but that was during Feb 2016. Right now, i wanted to wear it so bad bcs of my insecurity. But its been lagging for almost 2 yrs and obviously the price now won’t be the same anymore. It confused me if i should wear the braces or not :'( afraid that it will be so expensive now that it will burden my parents… I wish I do the braces early 🙁

    1. Hey there,

If it’s not an option now due to lack of funds, do it later. There’s a strong adult braces community

While waiting, do what you can to earn the money. Note that you don’t have to pay everything upfront – deposit first, then the rest is installments (in my case, RM3k out of RM8.5k)

      All the best okay.

    2. Yes, for severe Class 3 skeletal ( jaw relation, which lower jaw more protrude than upper jaw), surgery is the best option, but its not a cheap option.

  19. Great share Su.. im in my mid 30s n have been putting it off becoz of funds and the irony of how painfull it gonna be. But after much wait i decided to go for it. Stumbling on your blog has made me aware that im not alone in this journey just wish that i had the courage to do it when i was much younger.

    Thanks again for sharing.

    1. Hi Kat,

There’s a bunch of us in the same boat, going through the same experiences 🙂 All the best in your journey <3

  20. Hi suraya!

One fact people need to note: tooth/teeth extraction depends on an individual. Hence why they need us to do xray first. I dont have to extract any teeth. Based on my xray too, my wisdom teeth (meaning it wont messed with the movement of the teeth) has surfaced and there are no more gigi susu (dentist need to extract this too so the permanent tooth could be align instead of a tooth that will fall out).

    Personal experience to note:
The expected period may be extended due to:
    1. There would be months you end up skipping for reasons you cant avoid
    2. Alignment is not going as planned
In my cases, both happened. Still wearing braces atm

And, the monthly cost may be lesser at times. It’s been two months that I only pay rm100 (usually rm200) as my dentist only change the bottom wire. You will also be extra charge if you break a bracket (the one stuck to each tooth). So ppl who wants to wear braces, please be strict on what you bite. EACH bracket cost around rm 60-70

    1. Hi Afiqah,

Thanks for the info! Your dentist’s charges is different from what I normally hear. Good that you get to pay less.

Worth noting that my dentist didn’t charge when my bracket broke last time. I think this depends on the dentist kot.

  21. Hi Kat and everyone,

Having the exact feeling as you, I can relate to them years after years i have been putting it off and now there is something wrong with my bite, cant chew properly and never was confident with my smile. I have protruding 2 bunny teeth and overcrowded set of teeth.

Considering Invisalign – if only I have all that money! I will start with baby steps – consultation first. Good to know how technology has evolved and there are few alternatives to traditional braces.

  22. Hi Suraya,

Many thanks for the very informative article on braces cost in Malaysia.

Wished we would have found you sooner as we would have loved to help you save on the cost of invisible aligners, and I thought of sharing this as it could be useful to some of your readers, looking into their options 🙂

There is an alternative safe way to get invisible aligners at the fraction of the cost, all shipped to you in Malaysia!
I’m talking about a dentist directed, effective and guaranteed solution.
I’ve put a summary of how it works below but more information can be found on
www (dot ) straightteethdirect (dot) com

    1. It starts with a free Smile Diagnostic, through an app for detailed photographic views (all guided):
    2. If your case is deemed suitable for aligners at home you’ll be able to order an impression kit to take moulds of your teeth and return them to the lab.
    3. They’ll then be 3D scanned and turned into a smile simulation, that will be presented to you in a full orthodontic report prepared by a licensed European orthodontist.
    4. Then the aligners are custom made and shipped to your favourite address (home or work) and all the reviews an ongoing supervision is done via messages and photos through the app.

    Hope that helps 😉

  23. Gila BAPAK mahal!!!
I did mine in 2012 and took out in 2014, for only RM6500 in an orthodontist in Bangsar. No cabut gigi and I was fixed with Damon braces. If I choose clear then additional RM1000++ kut. As my dental treatment was covered by Company with a capped limit, I went for the ceramic Damon braces.

  24. Hi Suriya! Interesting article.. Btw I wanna share here something. Well, I’m 23 UG student just last year I went to a dental clinic following for periodontal treatment as well for my bracers at government clinic. Then, specialist from KP Cheras review my case and decided to to send me to combine clinic at Cahaya Suria Clinic. And just after the specialist review my case they said I can proceed for Bracers at this clinic and I’m still in shocked they decided to help me!

    1. My name is Suraya 🙂

Wow, that’s really cool to know! Quite heartwarming anecdote about our dental health system, thanks for sharing Suresh!

  25. Hi Suraya,

Very informative article indeed! I put on braces around the same time as you (early July 2017). Decided to go with Damon ceramic sebab memang vain pot! During the first 6 months, I noticed that the movements were significant (also sakit nak mamps…and very uncomfortable), but so glad that the teeth look so straight and almost uniformed now. the OCD-ness in me has been calmed!
So far, it’s been a pleasant journey, except the fact that my brackets tend to fall off every 2-3 weeks (kinda eat everything i want tbh). Dentist said that it varies from people, mine is probably due to bite and teeth movement .

Definitely gotta own it and just keep in mind that you are actually pulling it off (as it’s fashionable yea?……) Also noticed that I started to cover my mouth when I smile and laugh. Hope to take them off by end of this year! how about you?

    1. Hi Caryn,

Thanks! We are braces twinsies – dentist said I should be braces-free by the end of the year too! Can’t wait 🙂

Wow your brackets fell out quite often. That happened to me only one time so far. Tu pun cuak gila ahahahha

  26. Hey suraya, i really love your article so much! Government sucks actually, my name is on the waiting list for like 3 years plus already lol. How i wish i have a lot of money to go to the specialist tsk tsk T_T

    1. Yo Jess!

Most private hospital don’t ask you to pay a RM7000 upfront. There’s an option where you can also pay within a few years!

      Cheers!

  27. Did my braces in Pergigian Bangsar Malaysia. Had to go through a waiting years for 2 years(in between having a few checkups).

Cost was a little cheap, RM1000 to do bonding. But there’s other charges. Pulled out 4 tooth. Each tooth RM1. Then put on seperators(if needed). Moulding cost RM20. For every visit(cycle in a week) you have to pay RM5. I had visits for 4 times. So I payed RM5x4 = RM20.

Painkillers after tooth extraction is on request(no extra charges). Over the counter painkillers should also work.

For seperators I had it for a week. Was necessary to get painkillers around 750mg because the pain was unbeareable. Had to eat porridge throughout the week.

For the procedure, it’s still great. Its a painless procedure(except the tightening ofcs).

Still a cheap procedure than a RM7000 one, this is my opinion.

    1. Didn’t know there was one in Bangsar, nice. RM1000+ is an amazing price. Thanks for your sharing Ben!

  28. Sorry for my bad english.

Well i gonna ask where have cheaper place? my budget is 3-6k , i just wan a normal braces . i live in kl selangor.

    1. Hey SF,
You can start by asking dentists in your area. Usually there’s a direct correlation between the dentist’s office decor and their price. Others can comment too

  29. Hi, I put on ceramic braces for RM9k (including X Ray & scale model) but not including filing, pulling teeth and retainer. For my case I have to extracted 2 teeth.

  30. Hi, I took on braces on May this year. The dentist is based in Puchong. If upper teeth ceramic, lower teeth metal, the cost is about RM8,500.
Actually I am 34 years old, people are commented I am too old for braces. Quite sad about that.

  31. Hello. The Malaysian Association of Orthodontists website (www.mao.org.my) has general information about braces and a list of Orthodontists and their clinics. This may be helpful in identifying a clinic that meets someone’s needs.

  32. Stumbled upon ur blog because im looking for a dentist for my retainer. I still want to comment (most likely negative) even when you asked for positive sharing. Sorry lol. My experience was not all positive and i still hold grudge (too dramatic?) with the dentist. I was given an option to pull out 2 or 4 teeth. 2 minimum as needed for the necessary space, but to make the center line of the top teeth and bottom aligned, she said need to pull out 4. I was ignorant at that time, and so I was just thinking since I’m paying a lot, why not just go all out, so I chose to pull out 4. After 4 years of wearing it (supposedly only 3yrs, extended due to her misjudgement and me skipping several sessions too), had the bracers off, but the center line is still not aligned. And then got extra space, she told me to do crowning which I still have to pay. Such a waste of 2 healthy teeth! I blame her lack of skills.
On another note, I am surprised the price had went up so high now, I did mine in 2013, damon about RM5k+ (6k if include fixed retainer and xray) and it was considered average at that time. So, for those who has been waiting, might as well start soon, or at least book a fix quotation with deposit.

    1. Omg, you poor thing. I am SO sorry to hear your experience.

My braces might be extended another 6 months-1 year too, and I never skip sessions 🙁 I wonder if dentists tend to give best time estimates rather than realistic ones. I just want to take these off already

      Braces inflation is scary too!

      1. Sad, right? And to think I have to live with it till I die (or get it fixed which need money again). Lol. Sorry, I don’t mean to scare anyone. All my friend who wore bracers never had any experience such as mine, so I’m sure it is just the dentist. My sister wore bracers with the same dentist around the same time, she also didn’t like her. Immediately after she got the bracers off, she went to a different dentist for a new retainer. Her case was not so bad.

The moral of the story is, if you don’t like the dentist after a few sessions, change to a different one even when if you have paid the deposit. Better that than to regret it until you die.

    2. Can you share with us which clinic and which doctor? we can be informed of this and try to avoid going to this clinic.

  33. Does the implantation must be single payment or monthly payment? I’m worried about the cost. If they got instalment I’ll be happy. Let me now please

    1. Hey Tinesh,

Usually it’s upfront deposit + monthly payment. I paid RM3k deposit in the beginning and paying RM300 monthly

  34. Hi, I’m still a student which have actually 0 budget to wear braces. Anyone who knows a suitable clinic for me which the price range is between 2-3k? Or it was impossible to find a private hospital in this price? 👀 I plan to apply for government hospital but I found out my teeth is getting worse as the time I grow so i don’t think I can wait for another’s few years hmm. If you guys have any suggestions pls reply to me, much appreciate! <3

    1. Readers, please help Cher out!

Cher, it’s a good idea to ask dentists around your area first. You will see your dentist regularly, about once a month. Don’t pick a far option because 1) the transportation costs will add up and 2) if you ter-skip because you don’t have the time to go there, your will have to wear braces longer!

    2. You can go to Ipoh but im afraid if u choose to go far from your home the cost will be the same since u have to go every month for your braces adjustment. i went to Klinik pergigian jasmin in meru which they have a lot of doctors there. Every doctor is different specialist, my orthodontist named Dr. Asmak. She is a certified orthodontist who works in the government clinic but she’s doing a part time job there. I paid rm1500 for deposit and pay rm200 monthly. total cost is rm4500 including retainer. i did xray in different clinic but you can do your xray there which is additional cost. They just install an xray machine. before this tak ada

  35. Hi everyone, i am still wasting my time by surveying the best dental for braces with affordable price. hope someone will suggest me.

    1. Jack, it’s a good idea to ask dentists around your area first. You will see your dentist regularly, about once a month. Don’t pick a far option because 1) the transportation costs will add up and 2) if you ter-skip because you don’t have the time to go there, your will have to wear braces longer!

  36. I wore my braces for 3.5 years (extended as I missed quite a few appointments)and removed my braces many years back and I think the most important aspect when doing ortho treatment is to choose an orthodontist specialist and not a general dentist. In Malaysia general dentist are legally allowed to perform ortho treatment and some of them charge as much as specialist orthodontist. just for information specialist orthodontist have to undergo extra 3 years of full time post graduate studies. general dentist mostly attend weekend short courses and their skills are not the same as a specialist. government clinics that provide ortho treatment have specialist orthodontist and is the best option if you are young and have the time to wait due to the long waiting list. if going private you have to ensure to choose a specialist as there are many general dentist out there who are offering this service. I had a few friends who opted for the slightly cheaper general dentist but regretted later on as their results were not very good.

      1. if anyone is looking for a specialist orthodontist you can google National Specialist Register of Malaysia. there are more than 100 registered specialist all over Malaysia listed there with the clinic names included.

  37. sorry reply in malay.. Disebabkan saya still secondary highschool so I go to the government.. Mcm they said lahh.. it takes a long long time untuk sampai ke giliran kita.. Sama with me.. I have to wait untill I turns 20 years old !! And now I’m still waiting for 3 years more sbb kena tunggu selama 4 yearss.. Sebab nak pakai braces because of my classmate always kitai / bahan/ejek me so mcm x than thats why decide nak pakai braces tpi x sangka kena tunggu selama ni 😂😂

  38. I recently did my braces at ifloss dental clinic located at Desa Parkcity, Plaza Arkadia. Here is the link https://www.facebook.com/IFLOSSDENTAL/

I’m very happy with the progress right now. The dentist is very gentle and genuine. He explained in details to me all the option available not like some dentist will just suggest all the expensive treatments to you just to earn money.

My braces price is RM7k+ Damon metal comes with x ray and study model. Packages include all fillings, extraction and cleaning for 2 years too! I find this deal worth all the money with the value given. Saved me at least RM3k for all the work done and i don’t need to think about my teeth problem for 2 years at least, as he will take care of it for me. The dentist is also very experienced in doing braces. The only thing i don’t like is the food always stuck in btwn my brackets but lucky i get free cleaning everytime. haha..

  39. Replying to Steven’s comment regarding general dentists vs specialists :
I beg to differ. Unless your teeth are very bad in which case the general dentist will actually tell you they can’t take you in and you HAVE to go a specialist, if your doctor is confident he or she can fix your teeth then why not go with the cheaper option?
I chose a general dentist because a specialist costs 13K excluding the implant I need (3k+ in gov hospitals)

I’ve been wearing mine for about a year now (Damon) and I don’t regret it at all. Okay maybe the costs but having nice teeth is an investment is what I tell myself xD
I’m 20 BTW and the braces plus x rays and shit are 7k altogether

    1. Hi Suraya!
Fyi,I decided to sign up for my orthodontic treatment at government hospital since form 5 and GOD!The waiting list….I couldn’t even imagine how many people. I’ve been told to wait for 4 years and I’m already in my third year. I’ve called to the hospital to confirm the progress of that freakin waiting list and they said maybe next year August will do. I’m looking forward although it’s scary and painful from what I heard from others…

      1. It’s painful, yes, but not scary. It is quite exciting too tbh. It’s like you’re part of a small community. Will make friends easily with other bracefaces and ex-bracefaces. I quite enjoyed that 🙂

  40. I got my braces (damon ceramic) done at UKM’s dental faculty near KL GH for free. But that’s because the doctor (a senior doctor, not a student lol) was doing a research and she was looking for “guinea pigs”. I started around 2008 and the whole treatment took slightly under two years. The treatment was also professional and efficient.

My advice is try checking out our local university’s dental faculty websites to see if they have any research programmes. The waiting list is usually long (I was lucky I barely waited a month because I fit their research criteria), but it’s worth giving a shot.

Also, I’d like to give a shout out to our Klinik Pergigian Kerajaan. Only RM2 for a fast and efficient scaling. Our government clinics deserve more credit!

    1. Hi Chester C,

That’s so lucky of you! What an interesting tip to get your braces done, thanks so much for sharing this info with us!

  41. Hi Suraya,

    Thanks for your sharing.

I’m thinking of going for invasalign. But concern is the result. Is the result as good as the conventional one? Cuz I have done the conventional one in school time. Gosh! More than 20 years back 😢 But I didn’t wear the retainer after took off the braces. I was too young and too excited. And slowly my teeth moved. Luckily still better than before I got my braces. So it’s very very important to wear your retainer 😢

I have got the price from Tiew dental, the full package is rm18500 😱 How much is yours in total?

May I know how is your progress? Getting the result you want? Do people notice you are wearing the clearpath? Does it affect your speech? Anything else need to be aware? Do you feel uncomfortable?

Sorry for asking so many questions. Have a good day!

    1. Hi Yy,

Welcome, thanks for swinging by 🙂

I don’t know how to answer your question, I didn’t do invisalign, I did damon braces. Can anyone who tried the invisalign method chip in?

    2. Hi YY,
Did you signed up with Tiew? RM18500 including other treatment such as filing and scaling?
I am still doing survey and considering to take up Invisalign..

      Thanks

  42. Thanks for this article! I am working here in singapore and planning to go JB for braces because many says its cheaper.

    1. Hi Neveric,

I don’t know braces pricing in SG, but it should be cheaper. You have to take into account travel time and expenses to go for checkups, though. Factor that in and make your decision – it’s not always about the price, but also convenience

  43. Reading your post made me so thankful that I did my braces at the government dentist in jb when i was in form 4. This was in 1998 and back then the que wasn’t that long. It was just a few months I think. I wore the braces for 2 years and then the retainer for a year. I dont remember being told to wear the retainer when I go to bed for the rest of my life, so now at the age of 36, my gigi bawah dah gerak sikit. Damnnn.. rasa nak buat balik braces for my lower teeth, but looking at the price now OMG! It cost me only RM500 back then (or maybe less coz my mom paid not me obviously lol). Maybe I’d do composite veneers instead.

    1. Hi Fiq,

Lucky that you didn’t wait too long for govt dentist like most people here!

I’m tempted with veneers too. My dentist quotes RM350 per tooth. Wonder if govt dentist have this service hmmm

  44. Hi,
My son did orthodonsi in my country( he is 17 years old). I want to know, can he countinue his treatment in yr clinic?tq

  45. Sorry, not positive experiences. Started on Nov 2017, I paid RM7,000 for metal damon excluding retainer, including study model, at a clinic in bangsar. I don’t like the dr, lazy and not sincere, didn’t notice that my upper teeth are not centred. My friend paid RM5,000 for traditional braces excluding retainer in the same clinic, when completed, his front teeth are not centred, prone to the right side. Another friend paid RM24,000 for invisalign at Tung Shin Hospital. We started at about the same time.

    1. Hi June,

That sucks. What’s the clinic name? You can leave bad reviews to warn others on Google too.

Thanks for the Invisalign pricing. RM24k is just, wow. Way out of my budget

  46. Hi
I’m currently 16 and have been on the waiting list (government) since October 2016 and it’s still not my turn yet I asked them and they said they’re still helping ppl who’ve been on the waiting list since 2015 it’s been so long. I live in Sarawak Kuching and I hope could find some good recommendations for cheaper braces thank you

    1. Hi Audrey,

Read through some comments from others in similar situation as you. I’m afraid the long wait is common. But it is the cheapest option

  47. I am an orthodontist in KL with more than 10 years experience as specialist.
My charges metal braces. RM 6k
    Aligners RM 10K
    Installment payment options are available.
Just to let everyone know specialist not necessarily charge so much.
Good post on braces suraya. Keep up the good work.

  48. I was registered on the government waiting list on 2010 (I was form 3). Somehow throughout the next 1-2 years I called back and got to know my listing was cancelled. I forgot what happen, they say didn’t manage to contact me (so they taught I didn’t interest anymore) (Suppose they sent letter? My house number had changed ). Time has passed, this year January 2019 they called my mother hand phone (I didn’t have a hand phone that time) whether I still want to do. Then I went to the clinic to make appointment on February. Doing X-ray and Modelling and on April. (4 Teeth) extraction on June. July for braces. Cost about RM1.2K plus minus. 9 years had passed, the lady Doctor ask me whether recognize her as she said I was under her signature when the clinic decided to put me under waiting list. Not sure how they manage to dig out my name, but anyhow I am grateful and thankful to all the dentists , nurses and staffs at that particular clinic willing to help me.

    1. Hi Joshua,

Wow, that is lucky of you. The system sounds messy and undependable, but glad it worked out. 9 years! Thanks for sharing your experience

  49. Hi Suraya, thanks for the great info on this post!

I need help here. Hoping anyone with the similar experience can give me some opinions.

I wished to get orthodontic treatment since very long time ago, about 5years ago. Im having a class III maloccusion, so I have to get orthognathic surgery in order to correct my bite. But that time Im so afraid of this surgery and so I dragged the decision until after 1 year. I decided to do it. But here comes the problem, I am having periodontic problem as well. Now the dentist told me I have to settle my periodontic problem first before I can wear braces. All of these was based in government setting.

I would like to ask, anyone having periodontic problem and is having braces as well out there?

Is it possible to get a periodontist that would help me with my periodontic problem so that I can proceed with my braces?

    Thanks in advanced!

    1. Hey Anon,

I can’t help you here, this is a medical condition. What people do if they’re not sure if to get second or third opinions from other specialists

  50. I paid RM9,500 for clear aligners. I was not required to undergo any tooth extraction. Clear aligners are super convenient and do not hurt at all. Could not be anymore happier with this investment.

  51. Saw a comment above saying that he/she recently got a call back from the government dental after 9years, and the same thing happened with me too! I mean, I wasn’t taken off the list but I have just moved down from Penang to KL then so coming back & forth for the x-ray and the following treatment every 2weeks or so wasn’t ideal, so I thought maybe I’ll just put it off and go for a private clinic in KL. And then recently (after3-4years), I got a call from the Penang clinic asking me to go back for a checkup! Like they weren’t even asking, just gave me a date and time and sort of threaten me to be there on time HAHA. Anyways, out of my surprise, I was sent to the ortho department and the orthodontist had started discussing with me about plans to install my braces straightaway. So now I’m waiting to get my teeth extracted and I’ll be hooked in about a month or so. Btw, one question here, I have a bad teeth on my lower left jaw, so the ortho is proposing to extract different teeth from both sides, and he did say it will result in it slightly slanted, but it sounds a little off and scary to me, is that normal and will it be okay? Also, does anyone know if metal braces is the only choice at the government department? Anyways, I will be charged around Rm1250 and the orthodontist was kind and nice too hehe!

      1. I registered my name under the gov clinic in 2015 when I was form2 and got called in the beginning of 2018, so basically I waited for 2 years and a half. I was charged around 1200++, not more than 1400.

  52. Hi!

I’m 22 this year and last few weeks, I accidentally broke my front teeth (yes, both). Just finished the online classes and be able to see the dentist last week. The dentist said, the teeth can’t be saved and needed to be extracted, hence they’re now gone (yes, I look like nenek without my front teeth now). my parents made me agreed on pakai dentures after the teeth are gone. but the dentist suggested that it’s better to do braces with compression (since my gigi are quite teraburan) and bridges for the loss teeth. She gave me two weeks to wait for the gums to recover and to decided either to proceed with braces or dentures.

Discussed with my parents about it and my parents said to just go on with the ‘pakai dentures plan’. but i think it’s better to go with the ‘braces plan’. they said i can do the braces once i make my own money (I’m a student who still depends on MaPa’s monneh).

should i be stubborn and just go on with the braces or dentures for now?

    1. Oh crap, sorry to hear that. Sounds like an awful experience.

Re: which one – omg, follow advice from professionals pls, not random online ppl

If its any consolation, I did my braces in my late 20s, with my own money. No prob to do that.

  53. Hey
Just thinking to share that if you want invisalign but it is too expensive (my dentist say aro 16k), you can go for Zenyum
Its from Singapore, partnering with local Dentist
I just started my journey today – to mold my teeth to make my braces
Can share more after i start wearing it =)
Whole Zenyum thing would be aro 6k including retainer. I still feel expensive considering my minor issue to fix haha. But what to do everyone want to be prettier haha.

  54. Im using Invisalign in Japan (Im residing here), and suprisingly enough, Invisalign is actually cheaper than braces besi. I was opted for 7 sessions (300,000yen. i dont wanna convert that you do it yourself)

I registered for braces at Seremban GP in Form 4 or 5 (i dont remember) and was in the waiting list for 2 years i think. Finally got the call a few days before my overseas study departure and Mak told me to ignore it T,T
Went to a local government dental clinic when I was back on holidays, and can confirm that they do not accept braces appointments over the age of 17 (dah habis sekolah cannot).

    My comment on Invisalign;
    -takde cabut gigi
-its a slow process, I only notice my gigi taring moving after 6-7months.
-I have a lot of useless past-mouthpieces at home.
-It hurts just as much as normal braces, and on major treatments the clinic provides paracetamol.
-some clinics will need you to come for appointments weekly, mine only needed to go monthly.
-lost some weight bcs of the leceh rules when you put it on. Yay xD

    1. 300,000 yen is RM11.4k. I check because curious haha

I’m surprised that you say it hurts. Idk why I always assume its the painless way. Good to know!

  55. I did my braces in a clinic back in my hometown near Chemor with a really cheap price RM3k+
and it was a horrible experience.
I started at the age of 15 and my treatment still pending until I’m 22 now!
Worse is when my current dentist found out that my teeth are already loose from the braces and I might have to take out my front tooth eventually..*cries*
Anyway, I’m grateful that my current dentist in KL is so helpful and kind (anyone interested can find Dr Heng in Sri Petaling),despite all other dentists telling me that they had to reject my case.
Moral behind the story, don’t fall for the cheap ones! Quality matters 🙂

  56. I’m on my second week with damon metal braces! Did mine at a dental clinic in kulim, kedah. Costs rm6500 inclusive of everything. (Xrays, scaling, consultation, tooth plucking, all lah) so far so good but the bite bumps are so tiring 🙁

  57. Hello!
Thank you very much for this informative article!
I am moving to Malaysia soon for work and I am currently using metal braces and have been using it for more than a year now. Do you know if dental clinics in Malaysia will accept transferred patients from another country? Because you mentioned that the price for the monthly check-up is already included in the full price, I am afraid they aren’t willing to accept transferred patients.
